Director's Message

Medical imaging developed rapidly to play a central role in medicine today by supporting diagnosis and treatment of disease. Among the different imaging modalities, magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is considered one of the most versatile and innovative techniques due to it superior soft tissue contrast, 3D imaging capabilities and large range of ways to probe tissue and physiologic processes in the human body.

Our primary focus at the Center for Translational Imaging (CTI) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is the development, translation and application of radiologic imaging methods for Northwestern investigators. The center is an arm of the Department of Radiology, which has more than two decades of experience with MRI research and clinical translational imaging studies. Our main avenues of research are cardiovascular imaging, neuroimaging and small animal imaging.

Through joint faculty appointments and collaborations with Biomedical Engineering in the McCormick School of Engineering and other clinical departments at Feinberg, the center serves as a nexus for innovative imaging research and clinical translational studies as well as successful training and mentoring of graduate and postdoctoral students, fellows and residents.

Mission of the Northwestern Center for Translational Imaging

  1. To facilitate access to world-class translational imaging capabilities that promote the pre-clinical and clinical research efforts of both Northwestern investigators and our regional academic and industrial partners
  2. To catalyze the development of innovative imaging technologies for broad-scale interrogation of disease processes, guidance of therapeutic interventions and the study of human physiology and function
  3. To provide unique educational opportunities, thus fostering efficient, effective utilization of these valuable resources while training the next generation of clinicians, biomedical scientists and engineers
